The collection contains a letter from Brautigan, 1965 August 4, stating tha he has written a novel called "Trout fishing in America" to be published by Grove Press. He has plans for a similar novel [A Confederate general from Big Sur?], and is applying for a Guggenheim to support the endeavor, and asks Ciardi to be a voucher for him. The collection also contains two follow up letters from Ciardi, 1965 September 10, one to Brautigan, saying he would be happy to help him after he has read Brautigan's book, and another on the same date to Barney Rosset of the Grove Press asking for a copy of Brautigan's book to read as it is "awkward to recommend a gent without any real basis for judging what he says he wants to do...."
